Three months after a cyberattack shook five southwestern Ontario hospitals, restoration efforts are still months away from fully restoring systems at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare.

During a board of directors meeting on Wednesday, HDGH president and CEO Bill Marra said the hospital is moving into phase two of recovery.

All five affected hospitals have collaborated to bring systems back online after the October cyberattack that targeted their shared service provider, TransForm Shared Service Organization.

“We meet several times a week,” said Marra.

“We have site leads that coordinate efforts, as well. So the premise behind that is to, firstly, be on the same page. And secondly, to ensure that we’re not advancing one platform or one priority for one hospital at the expense of the other.”

Phase one of in the restoration effort focused on restoring the clinical platforms to limit interruptions to patient care.

The hospital hit a milestone on Dec. 11, said Marra, when patient health records came back online.

“That was a significant achievement because it really improved operations,” said Marra.

“It provides access to records, not only internally, but across the system to our colleagues and other hospitals.”

He said staff emails have also been reinstated.

Marra said an ongoing cyber investigation will help the hospital formulate strategies to prevent future cyberattacks.
