St. Clair College is teaming up with two private cyber security firms to offer executive level courses in the face of increasing risks and regulatory requirements presented by artificial intelligence.

The college, The SANS institute, a global cybersecurity training firm, and siberX, a Canadian cybersecurity company specializing in immersive simulations, will together offer training through an initiative called NOW//AI, that are tailored to the needs of firms in Southwestern Ontario, said Amar Singh, chief information officer and chief information security officer at St. Clair College.

“We partnered to provide real-world exercise training to executives, to IT leaders, to boards to understand AI cybersecurity and be upfront and be ready for everything as the world changes with all of these sophisticated attacks,” Singh said.

Previous cybersecurity breaches in the region show training could be of benefit to local organizations, he said.

In October 2023, a ransomware attack at five Southwestern Ontario hospitals stole personal details from close to 300,000 people. Daixin Team, a ransomware and data extortion group, claimed responsibility for stealing millions of records from Bluewater Health, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Erie Shores HealthCare, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, and Windsor Regional Hospital.

Windsor hospitals had systems functional within a few months, but full recovery from the attacks stretched well into 2024.

The NOW//AI program can be tailored to individual industries, such as health care, greenhouses and manufacturing, to simulate potential situations they may face, said Singh.

“We want the institution to understand how it affects them in their everyday world and also when they walk out, have real-world experience to say, I can go in the next day and I can make changes to make myself more secure, or have better governance, or have better controls to ensure that my institution is safe.”

The vital interest is to protect data, Singh said. “Data is the new … gold and oil.”

No online system can be fully protected from cyberattacks, but preventative measures and guidelines for what to do when an attack occurs helps to reduce risk, he said.

“But what we can do is prepare you … for what’s going to happen, and then prepare you to be aware of your environment and what you’re looking for and what protocols you should have to limit the risk.”

The program features a full-day “war room simulation” led by SANS. “The program mirrors the intensity and ambiguity of real-world cyber crises, providing leaders with practical experience in responding to complex, fast-moving threats,” the partners said in a release.

SiberX CEO Mahdi Raza said the three partners’ combined qualities will help leaders prepare for cyber attacks. “By combining SANS’ global expertise, St. Clair College’s regional leadership in applied learning, and siberX’s innovation in immersive experiences, we are creating a program that prepares leaders for the realities of AI-driven risk,” he said.
