In a major cyber safety initiative during the ongoing holy Rath Yatra 2026 in Puri, the Cyber Crime Unit of the CID, Crime Branch, Odisha has blocked 121 fake hotel websites and 33 fake hotel webpages to protect lakhs of pilgrims from online fraud.
According to the Crime Branch, the preventive drive was carried out between June 1 and July 18, 2026, during which officials closely monitored the digital space to identify and take action against fake hotel booking websites, fraudulent travel portals and misleading online content targeting devotees.
As part of the operation, the Cyber Crime Unit also got 19 misleading online contents related to Rath Yatra removed or blocked to prevent devotees from falling victim to cyber scams.
In coordination with concerned service providers, the unit further blocked 893 mobile numbers and 793 IMEIs that were allegedly being used for customer care fraud, e-commerce fraud, fake hotel booking scams and other cyber crimes targeting pilgrims.
The Crime Branch said these proactive measures have significantly contributed to ensuring a safe and hassle-free Rath Yatra by protecting devotees from financial fraud.

The police have advised pilgrims to book hotels, guest houses and travel services only through official websites and verified applications. Devotees have also been urged to avoid clicking on booking links received through SMS, WhatsApp or social media and to verify the authenticity of websites and contact numbers before making online payments.
Police further cautioned the public against fraudulent offers of cheap darshan tickets, hotel rooms or ‘special passes’ that appear too good to be true. Citizens have also been reminded never to share their OTP, UPI PIN, bank account or card details with anyone.
In case of any cyber fraud, victims have been advised to immediately call the National Cyber Helpline at 1930, report the incident through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, or contact the nearest police station.
