The IBM partnership with OpenAI, which was revealed on August 13, 2026, will involve incorporating OpenAI’s most recent AI products and technologies into IBM Consulting Advantage.
This will include GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, enabling IBM consultants to utilize OpenAI’s technology during work for their clients. Both organizations will also be undertaking business activities centered around the areas of finance, government, telecommunications, and retail.

IBM Partnership Focuses on Three Key Areas
The IBM partnership will cover three main spheres of enterprise AI implementation. The first will include assistance for enterprises in migrating from older processes to AI-driven processes in financial activities, procurement, customer management, and human resources management.
The second sphere will be associated with application modernization and software development, where the IBM consultants will utilize Codex and ChatGPT Work.
The third area of emphasis is cybersecurity. IBM intends to further develop its relationship with OpenAI through the use of Daybreak and Autonomous Security, both of which allow companies to use AI for their security operations and software vulnerabilities.
In addition, IBM has created an OpenAI Practice. As per IBM, “thousands of consultants and engineers” would take up expert-level certifications via the OpenAI Partner Network, and IBM would create “on-premises capable teams” and would join OpenAI’s Elite Partner tier.
OpenAI Gains Access to IBM’s Enterprise Network
The partnership with IBM enables OpenAI to benefit from the biggest corporate consultancy network. Through IBM Consulting Advantage, AI-enabled assistants, agents, and applications are made available to almost 150,000 IBM consultants worldwide.
IBM claimed that Consulting Advantage was responsible for over 150 projects completed and had boosted the productivity of consultants by up to 50%. Later, IBM upgraded the solution with an AWS version.
The market potential of this technology is also considerable for IBM. The revenue from IBM’s generative AI reached over $12.5 billion in 2025, whereas the income from IBM Consulting was over $21.1 billion.
Cybersecurity Work Builds on Existing Collaboration
The IBM partnership will also include expanding the cybersecurity work that was initiated earlier in the year. In June, IBM was part of OpenAI’s Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, leveraging OpenAI’s model for finding and validating software weaknesses in the customer environment.
On August 10, OpenAI upgraded the Daybreak program and provided IBM and other consulting firms with unique models for cybersecurity.
GPT-5.6 will now be integrated into the overall AI strategy of IBM using the Consulting Advantage program. This IBM partnership enables companies to have access to OpenAI technology via IBM’s consultants, and OpenAI gets access to an important channel for the deployment of its models.
The collaboration underscores the trend of incorporating AI models into consulting, software engineering, and cybersecurity solutions.
