The Federal High Court in Abuja has set October 27, 2025, for the arraignment of Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC).
The Department of State Services (DSS) filed a five-count charge against Sowore, accusing him of cybercrime.
The case was brought before the court by the DSS through the Federal Ministry of Justice, with Director of Public Prosecutions, Muhammed Abubakar, representing the agency alongside other government lawyers.
The DSS had earlier given Sowore a one-week deadline, starting September 8, to delete a social media post they described as “false, malicious, and inciting” against President Bola Tinubu.
The activist ignored the warning, and the deadline expired on September 15.
His planned arraignment on Tuesday, September 30 was stalled after the court noted he had not been formally served with the charges.
During the hearing, the prosecution said they were ready to arraign Sowore, X Corporation, and Meta (Facebook) Inc. as first, second, and third defendants.
However, Omoyele Sowore’s lawyer, Marshal Abubakar, told the court they had not received the charge sheet.
Counsel for Meta also agreed, pointing out he had only just been served in court.
X Corporation had no legal representation at the sitting.
Sowore is accused of using his X handle to publish a post deemed offensive, which described President Tinubu as a criminal.
The post, made on August 25, allegedly violated Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Department of State Services (DSS) had given Omoyele Sowore one week to retract the post he made on social media describing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal.”
